| The Growth of Mobile Phone Companies in South East Asia |
Introduction
South East Asia is the geographical region that includes, of course, China, with a population of over 1,000 million, alone, but also the smaller countries of Thailand, Vietnam, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia with a collective population of 500 million. On sheer population statistics alone it is therefore easy to see why the region represented an untapped market for mobile phone providers, and, indeed, the number of mobile phone subscribers in South East Asia increased by 70, or 80, times between 2000 and 2007. Mobile phone usage in developing countries in the region spurred by the speed of installation, and reduced cost, of mobile phone towers, compared with landlines, and the falling cost of lower end handsets has seen particularly dramatic increases.
Mobile Phone Companies
The Singtel Group with its headquarters in Singapore, but with major investments in telecommunications companies throughout South East Asia, and elsewhere is the largest mobile phone provider in the region, with more than 185 million customers. Indeed, this figure represents the largest mobile phone customer base anywhere in Asia, outside China. Singtel provides a range of prepaid, and pay as you go, mobile phone tariffs, and has more than 400 roaming partners in 200 worldwide destinations.
Next in line is Telkomsel, the leading mobile phone operator in Indonesia, by market share, with just over 51 million customers. Telkmosel operates its own dual band, 900MHz/1800MHz, GSM network throughout Indonesia, and recently entered into a partnership with Nokia Siemens, to use Networks` LBS ("Location Based Services") in its mobile network. Telkomsel was, in fact, the first mobile phone operator to launch 3G services in Indonesia, in late 2006.
Other major mobile phone providers in the South East Asia region include Smart Communications, based in the Phillipines, Advance Info Services, based in Thailand, and IndoSat, the second largest operator in Indonesia. Smart Communications, for example, again provides a range of mobile phone tariffs, under the Smart, and Talk `n Text, brands with just over 34 million subscribers, collectively and a wireless broadband service, known as SmartBRO. Advanced Info Service is the largest mobile phone operator in Thailand, with 23 million subscribers to its digital GSM network, while IndoSat is part-owned by the Indonesian government, and offers Internet access, satellite telephony, etc., along with the usual range of tariffs for prepaid and pay as you go phones. |
